How Electric Cars Could Change the World

Will this change the world?

Electric cars are already here and have been continually improving in both performance, range and price over recent years.

As people around the world move more and more towards buying and using electric cars instead of internal combustion engine cars, plenty of changes are happening.

One big change of course is less local pollution from car exhausts. This may not have had much effect yet, but as more and more combustion engine cars are replaced with electric cars we should see a significant drop in pollution, especially in cities.

Of course the electricity for those cars has to come from somewhere, so potentially that pollution can just get moved to power stations instead. However, renewable energy sources and lower pollution sources such as nuclear can make significant contributions to that energy demand.

Most, if not all, car manufacturers are either already producing some electric cars, or are in development of them. And some like Tesla only produce electric cars, not combustion engines at all.

Positives

  • Less local pollution
  • Quieter roads and cities
  • Cheaper maintenance (less moving parts)
  • Parked cars could act as local batteries

Negatives

  • Potentially just moves the pollution elsewhere
  • More advanced systems needed for maintenance

What other positive or negative outcomes do you think may come from the widespread use of electric cars instead of internal combustion engine cars?
